The next Apple keynote is just days away. At 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, Apple will hold an event where it reveals, it’s thought, four new iPhones, a brace of Apple Watches and maybe more. You can read the latest run-down to the schedule here. But among the rumors, one mystery remains: what will the name be for the most talked-about iPhone to be launched.
What will the all-new, slim iPhone be called?

I predict that Apple will reveal its new phones at the special event in this order: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Though there are plenty of new features, different designs and hardware upgrades to be announced for those phones, Apple will save one phone to last.
The most headline-grabbing rumors have concerned an iPhone that’s slimmer than any other iPhone ever. But nobody knows the name just yet.
Could it be the iPhone 17 Slim? The favorite suggestion is iPhone 17 Air, but maybe it’s not quite right.
One thing’s for sure, it’s not going to be iPhone 17 Edge, as Edge is the name Samsung scooped up for its slim model, which launched in the spring (and which, Samsung said, was designed way before there was a hint of a shadow of a ghost of a rumor about the Apple slim phone).
But where the iPhone 12 mini was, you know, a smaller version of a iPhone, and the iPhone 14 Plus was bigger, but still a version of the regular iPhone, this feels like something completely different, assuming the rumors and reports are correct. A phone in its own right, not a version of the regular iPhone 17.
I still think Air is going to be the key word in the phrase as it has such a heritage with Apple, from MacBook Air to iPad Air, not to mention its appearance in words like AirPods.
It was always an inspired choice, effortlessly conveying lightness and a thin profile.
But, and I’m just wondering, could it be that it will be such a change that Apple will simplify the title. How about just a two-word name: iPhone Air?
After all, the three iPhone SE models didn’t have numbers attached. Nor Apple Watch SE. Maybe Apple will want to set the Air apart a little, too.
Only a week until all is known, including the name.
