I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone want to return to the Star Wars franchise more than Ewan McGregor, who at every turn seems to be proposing ways for his younger Obi-Wan Kenobi variant to return after his own series ended, presumably permanently.
There’s a fun new quote from Ewan McGregor speaking at Fan Expo where he talks about yet another place he could show up. The not-happening Andor season 3:
“I watched Andor and I watched the first episode of it at home with my little boy, and then I realized what everyone was talking about. And then watched all of the whole of the first season and all of the second season just on my own without him, because I couldn’t wait to get through it all. You know, he watched bits of it with me, but I thought it was great. I really liked it.”
“And then I got really excited. I was thinking, ‘I think I’m in this timeline. I think I could be in Season 3.’ I was super excited, and then I realized, ‘Oh no.’ So anyway, maybe if there was, I could have squeezed in there, if only. There’s always a chance that maybe there’s a story that’s happening at the same time where it kind of crosses over. So there’s always a chance if Disney is listening — hypothetically, hypothetically. Come on, Disney.”
As we know, there is no Andor season 3, given that season 2 ends the moment Rogue One starts, and then its namesake dies by the end of that film. It was also the case that Andor was purposefully designed around having no Jedi and no lightsabers, which is more or less something that never happens across almost any Star Wars project.
Again, McGregor is determined to come back. He’s tried to get Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 in motion, though that hasn’t happened yet. More recently he’s turned his sights to The Clone Wars, the Dave Filoni animated series that featured the adventures of Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka in the period between Episodes 2 and 3. Now, Ewan is studying the entire series:
Previously, he’s commented that there were probably other stories during that time that could be filmed, and a stated goal of both him and Hayden Christensen is to work together again (Christensen will appear in Ahsoka season 2).
I have always believed that Disney will refuse to leave the Skywalker era for good, and there are years and years of stories waiting to be adapted into live-action in The Clone Wars. Is that a good idea? Of course not, but Disney is full of not-good ideas in its Star Wars productions, and they have wrung this era dry otherwise.
I believe that Ewan will figure out a way to return somehow. He’s got the star power and he’s playing an important character. But no, no Andor season 3 buddy.
