When you’re a nervous flyer, it can feel like nobody around you understands what you’re feeling in the moment. But as it turns out—there are millions of anxious flyers across the country.
In fact, a new survey by travel site LocalsInsider.com found that certain American cities have significantly more anxious flyers than others, with many residents reporting things like high-volume crowds or family-filled flights making flying more anxiety-inducing. The survey also found the cities where residents use alcohol or medication to calm their nerves before boarding their flight.
Here are the American cities with the most anxious flyers according to the survey:
Miami
The survey found that Miami is the city with the highest number of anxious flyers in the country with an overall composite score of 8.4 out of ten. It found that the combination of crowded terminals, language barriers, and the large number of international flight paths makes the airport inherently more stressful and prone to cause stress and anxiety among travelers.
Philadelphia
The second American city with the highest number of anxious flyers is Philadelphia, with an overall score of 7.9 out of ten. The survey found that residents of Philadelphia reported very high levels of stress before even arriving at the airport, with anxiety getting so bad that many have trouble sleeping the night before a flight.
Nashville
Nashville ties with Philadelphia as the city with the second-highest number of anxious flyers, with a composite score of 7.9 out of ten. The survey found that Nashville’s increase in popularity as a travel hub could be the main factor as to why locals are more anxious than before. The increased flight volume and tourist traffic make the airport more difficult to navigate than it once was.
San Antonio
The city with the fourth-highest number of anxious flyers is San Antonio, with a composite score of 7.7 out of ten. San Antonio residents reported high rates of flight-related anxiety overall, especially a fear of turbulence. The city also ranked second for residents who are most likely to use alcohol or take medication in order to calm their nerves before boarding.
Orlando
Orlando earned fifth spot with a composite score of 7.1 out of ten. The survey found that due to Orlando being one of the top destinations for families, family-filled flights might cause higher stress levels for the average Orlando resident. There are also long security lines and high-volume crowds to take into account, especially during peak travel season.
