Anyone who’s had a hard time getting into Dominique Crenn’s Michelin three star restaurant Atelier Crenn in San Francisco or not sampled her dishes in Air France First Class has another option to experience this master chef’s creations. It also comes with a scenery advantage: the pastoral stretches of the French countryside floating by. Crenn has been named the first culinary creator for Les Bateaux Belmond, creating dishes for the seven small luxury boats traversing the canals in the regions of Champagne, Burgundy and the South of France.

“Partnering with Les Bateaux Belmond has allowed me to celebrate France in a deeply personal and thoughtful way,” she explains. “Their commitment to craftsmanship, culture and timeless hospitality reflects my culinary ethos rooted in storytelling and creating memories. I was drawn to this collaboration not only for the opportunity to design menus inspired by the diverse regions of the area, but to create moments of connection and discovery for guests as they travel with Belmond and fall in love with the flavors, traditions, and spirit of France.”

Dominique Crenn’s Menus

Menus are designed to reflect the region and the season. In the North, menus include dishes such as Spring Pea Tart with Milk Velouté, Trout Roe and Mint; Tartare of Tomatoes with Almond, Garlic and Miso; Poached Whole Chicken with Fricassee of Vegetables, Mustard and Cream and Lemon and Olive Oil Tart with Tarragon and Pistachio. The Southern routes feature menu items such as Whole Roasted Sea Bream with Carrot, Chorizo, Bitter Lettuce and Vinaigrette of Sorrel; the French style ravioli Raviole du Dauphiné with Bouillabaise, Crab and Mussels and Tropezienne composed of Peach, Verbena and Honey.

The Boats’ Itineraries In The North

Apart from the cuisine, the decor in the boats is plush and the itineraries reflective of the best in the region. In the North, the signature, antique filled three bedroom Coquelicot sails between Châlons-en-Champagne and Jaulgonne with a special stop at Maison Ruinart due to a partnership with the famous champagne house. In Burgundy, the three bedroom Fleur de Lys travels from Dijon to Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune stopping to explore historic towns, major vintages and architectural sights such as Dijon’s Palace of the Dukes and Chateauneuf-en-Auxois which partly dates back to the 12th century.

Also in Burgundy, the four cabin Lilas travels between Auxonne and Lyon, stopping to give guests the chance to experience famous vintages, regional culinary specialties at local restaurants and majestic chateaux. The four cabin Amaryllis travels the Canal du Centre from St-Léger-sur-Dheune to Pontailler-sur-Saône and the wine intensive Route des Grand Crus. Apart from famous vineyards in Beaune, Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis, guests can explore the countryside by bicycle and hot air balloon or stop for a round of golf.

The Boats’ Itineraries In the South

In Provence, the six cabin Napoléon cruises the Rhône from Tain L’Hermitage to Avignon, stopping for a truffle excursion in Grignan, to allow guests to explore local markets or to bicycle through lavender fields. The six cabin Pivoine cruises the sunny Camargue from Avignon to Sète with views of flamingos and wild horses in its nature preserve and excursions into the famous towns of Provence: Avignon, Saint-Rémy and Arles. The intimate two cabin Alouette cruises the Canal du Midi from Carcassonne to Béziers in the Languedoc region with the opportunity to explore the top vineyards of Bordeaux including a private tour and tasting at Château d’Yquem and a relaxing sojourn at the wine spa Les Sources de Caudalie.

The season runs through late October and begins again in April. And the boats are available only by exclusive private charter for one’s guests. Unless, by chance, Dominque Crenn is in the area and decides to stop by.
