Tempur-Pedic is a household name as one of the longest running and most popular mattress brands in the industry. The Adapt line includes three models, with the Tempur-Adapt Mattress positioned as the entry-level option. Itâs available in either an all-foam or hybrid construction, both offering cooling relief and the brandâs signature memory foam comfort. We had nine team members test the memory foam model and compare it to over a dozen competitors. Additionally, two long-term testers each slept on a different modelâone on the foam and the other on the hybridâin their homes for over a month. Our Tempur-Adapt review shares insights from a range of body types, genders and sleep preferences, and highlights who we think itâs best suited for.

If you remember the decades-old commercial featuring a woman walking across a mattress while a wine glass stays perfectly still on the other side, that was Tempur-Pedicâshowcasing its signature motion-absorbing power. Todayâs Tempur-Pedic mattresses preserve that same performance feature, along with modern upgrades like cooling materials, washable covers, optional coils and a variety of firmness levels. Below, see what our testers thought about the Tempur-Adapt Mattress after evaluating its firmness, feel, pressure relief, support, ease of movement and more.

Our Initial Thoughts On The Tempur-Adapt Mattress
Memory foam mattresses can be divisive, but the Tempur-Adapt had widespread appeal among our testers. Mattress updates writer Alexandra Garrett noted, âThis mattress seems to have everything memory foam fans could need. Itâs cool to the touch, squishy and responsive, and it has a very luxurious feel.â
Another tester echoed her thoughts, praising its plushness from the cover âto the way it slowly sinks when sitting or pressing your hand into it.â They add, âIt feels how you would expect the typical memory foam mattress to feelâwith some density and slow sink.â From a brand that practically pioneered the material, you can expect a prominent contouring effect, but not at the expense of support or ease of movement.
Tempur-Adapt Construction, Firmness And Feel
The Adapt Mattress has the lowest height in the Adapt line at around 11 inches tall. The exact layers inside depend on the construction you choose. Hereâs a breakdown:
- Cover: Polyester and polyurethane laminate that feels cool to the touch.
- Comfort layer: A 1.5-inch layer of Tempur-Material for pressure relief.
- Transition layer: A 1.5-inch foam layer made with firmer Tempur-Material that neutralizes the support material below.
- Support layer: Either a dense foam layer (memory foam model) or over 1,000 pocketed coils (hybrid model).
The Tempur-Adapt Mattress is available in a medium firmness level, though most of our testers rated it as medium to slightly firmerâcloser to medium-firm. One of our long-term testers, who weighs under 150 pounds and also places it around medium-firm, describes it as âa good combination of firm yet very comfortable and cushioned.” She adds that despite its dense feel, “I donât feel pressure on my body, and I wake up without any soreness.â

Its memory foam sensation is immediately apparent; one tester describes it as having very little bounce, striking a balance between dense and soft. âThereâs also minimal sinkage, but just enough to conform to your bodyâs weight.â Our long-term tester who tried the hybrid model with coils adds, âIt offers a unique mix of softness and support (with a little give on top). Still, that cushion is not so soft that you feel like youâre sinking into it.â
Overall, it provides a comfortable middle groundâconforming to your joints while gently lifting your spine. Most of our testers felt it offered just the right amount of sinkage without making you feel stuck.
Tempur-Adapt Mattress Features
Hereâs a look at the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Mattressâ most important features after our testers put it through group and at-home testing.
Pressure Relief
Although our team agrees that it falls around a medium to medium-firm on the spectrum, the bed offers enough pressure relief for most side sleepers while maintaining spinal alignment for back and stomach sleepers.
While lying on her side, Garrett says, âIt provides a nice touch of pressure relief for my shoulders and hips.” Another tester adds, âThere is some feeling of weightlessness with the amount of support that is provided when sleeping on the side, which is normally the type of feeling only when I am lying on my back.â In the end, we rated it an 8.5 out of 10 for both side sleeping and the pressure relief category. That said, side sleepers under 150 pounds may feel itâs too firm and should opt for a softer, plusher mattress.
Cooling
Although all-foam mattresses are known for retaining warmth, the Tempur-Adapt is fitted with a cooling cover that helps draw away body heat and evenly disperses it throughout the bed. Many of our group testers noticed its cool-to-the-touch feel right away, but one of our long-term testers, who is a self-proclaimed chronically hot sleeper, calls its temperature regulation abilities neutral.
While she expected it to sleep hot, she says, âIt doesnât seem to make me much hotter than other traditional spring mattresses that I have slept on in the past, but I have woken up sweaty on this mattress.â At the same time, our other long-term tester who tried the hybrid said she had no problem with overheating, whereas her old mattress did leave her in night sweats. With mixed results, we think a majority of people should sleep comfortably on the Adapt, but those who are prone to night sweats should consider the hybrid model, the cooling Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Breeze Mattress or one of our best cooling mattress picks.

Motion Transfer
Our testers found one of the Adapt memory foam mattressâ biggest strengths is its ability to stop motion from traveling across it, which helps limit nighttime disturbances from your partner or pet. To test its effectiveness, we placed a glass of water near the edge of the mattress and had our team members make different movements around the glass. It scored a solid 9 out of 10 after our tests. Our long-term tester, who shares a bed with her significant other, also agrees with this rating. âThe motion isolation has been a game changer for keeping me asleep when my partner is moving around in the night,â she says.
While we think the memory foam model performs slightly better in this category, our hybrid tester claims to have had zero issues. She adds, âItâs also worth noting that our two younger children often end up in our bed in the middle of the night. I can move out of bed without disturbing a little one sleeping next to meâthat alone makes this mattress worth the price tag.â
Support
Due to the bedâs slightly firmer and denser feel, we found the Tempur-Adapt offers necessary support for sleeping prone and supine. One tester calls it the âideal mattress for back sleepersâ because itâs âsupportive, soft and the memory foam molds to your body perfectly.â Overall, our testers scored it a 9.5 out of 10 for back sleeping.
Garrett adds, âStomach sleeping is also very nice.â Rather than sinking into the mattress, she says, âI feel lifted, supported and overall comfortable.â With that said, we think the hybrid model is a better fit for sleepers who weigh around or over 250 pounds, as its steel coils provide more spinal reinforcement, support and durability. According to Tempur-Pedic, its beds donât have a weight limit, but the average for an all-foam bed is typically around 600 pounds (or 300 pounds on each side), and a little more for hybrid mattresses.
We also found the foam model has better-than-average edge support for a mattress without springs, as we scored it an 8 out of 10. âThis has excellent edge support while lying down,” says one tester under 150 pounds. “Itâs virtually indistinguishable from the center to the edge.â A 250-pound-plus tester agrees, but adds itâs a little less sturdy when you sit along the side (which is to be expected for most mattresses).
Ease Of Movement
Memory foam mattresses often feature slow-moving foams that take a few moments to bounce back to their original shape, which can make it more difficult to change sleep positions or get in and out of bed. While our testers do note the Tempur-Adapt provides some sinkage and no bounce, itâs not enough to where youâre struggling to switch positions. Our group of testers rated the Tempur-Adaptâs ease of movement an 8 out of 10, as did our long-term tester whoâs sleeping on the foam model at home. But for more responsiveness and bounce, consider the hybrid model.

About Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic is a top-rated mattress brand that pioneered including memory foam in mattresses after NASA-funded scientists created the material to improve seat comfort and absorb shock during flightsâhence its superior ability to deaden movement across a bed. In addition to mattresses, you can also find an array of pillows, sheets, bedroom furniture and more in the brandâs catalog, many of which contain the signature contouring foam.
Shipping And Delivery
Tempur-Pedic offers free white glove delivery on most mattresses (excluding the Tempur-Cloud). This service allows you to schedule a date and time for professionals to deliver and set up your new mattress, and remove your old one if needed. The brand ships mattresses about three business days after purchase to the nearest local delivery hub, with the full delivery process taking seven to ten business days.
Trial Period And Returns
The brand gives customers 90 nights to decide if their new mattress is right for them. If you arenât satisfied, you can reach out to customer service to initiate a return, but Tempur-Pedic asks you to wait at least 30 nights to let your body get accustomed to the new feel and firmness. If you choose to go through with a return, you get a refundâminus a $175 shipping fee.
Warranty
Tempur-Pedic provides a 10-year warranty on the Tempur-Adapt Mattress, which states that the brand will replace or repair it if it has a manufacturing defect like excess deterioration or foam cracking within ten years of your purchase. Conditions do apply, like you must have proof of purchase at the time of your claim and keep your mattress on a proper, supportive bed frame.
Other Mattresses From Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic offers a wide variety of options, from simple foam mattresses to high-tech smart beds. Most people should be able to find an accommodating pick, whether youâre a prominent back sleeper looking for a firm hybrid or a side sleeper prone to night sweats wanting plush, cooling comfort.
Tempur-Adapt Review: Final Thoughts
After putting the Tempur-Adapt memory foam and hybrid mattresses to the test, we understand the Tempur-Pedic hype. The Adaptâs dense and supportive foams slowly mold to the curves of your body, making its overall feel lifted enough for back and stomach sleepers but properly cushioned for most side sleepers to feel pressure relief along their joints. Side sleepers under 150 pounds, however, should consider a softer mattress for better plushness.
Itâs a standout choice for couples who who want to sleep soundly without being disrupted by each otherâs movements, as a long-term tester called its motion-isolating abilities her favorite feature, and its perimeter maintains proper support. Plus, the brand offers multiple split sizes including split king and split California king. We also appreciate its good ease of movement and temperature regulation, especially when you consider these are common faults of competing beds with similar memory foam materials. Itâs not the coolest mattress weâve tried, but the hybrid model does a particularly good job at promoting airflow and keeping you comfortable through the night. However, for extra-hot sleepers or women going through menopause, weâd consider a more active cooling choice.

How We Tested The Tempur-Adapt Mattress
Each mattress we review at Forbes Vetted undergoes a testing process where we take a close look at its most important features, and many beds are put through multiple rounds of evaluations, including with testers in a group and long-term testing at home.
- We had nine team members, including Chapman, test the Tempur-Adapt memory foam mattress alongside other popular foam beds on the market. This way, we were able to discover their subtle differences and gain a wider perspective from different sleeper and body types.
- We had two people take the Tempur-Pedic Adapt Mattress home and test it in their bedrooms for over a month to get a better understanding of how the beds perform in real life over the long term. One person tried the hybrid model, while the other tried the all-foam.
- Each of our testers rated metrics like firmness, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, ease of movement and perimeter sturdiness on a 1 to 10 scale, and their scores were averaged to find an overall mattress rating.
