Atlantaâs culinary and cocktail offerings continue to evolve and this summer the cityâs wine bar scene welcomed some delicious newcomers: Madeira Park and Fawn Wine and Amaro Bar. In a city that has suffered a paucity of wine-focused destinations, this is a welcome and long-overdue development. Italian dining options continue to impress as well with the re-opening of Krog Bar and the debut of Pendolino.
Airy, open space with plenty of big booths to spread out into, great runway of a bar for a quick pizette and an amaro, a solid menu that offers options (go light and easy with a pizette or crudo or dig into a multi-course meal with a seafood dish, fresh pasta. Smart wine list, amaro flights (three different options) and probably the best old fashioned in Atlanta, made with Amaro Noninoâkiller.
Service is spot on, kitchen timing is as well. I really like the make your own adventure offerings here. Dining out has become prohibitive in many cases, so itâs refreshing to see a menu that has satisfying plates at nice prices.
Local Decatur couple Terry and Jenn Koval have invested much time and love in the cityâs culinary culture and this new wine and amaro bar is their latest offering. Intimate and relaxed, the subdued moody hues give this new spot a very inviting ambiance, which is perfect for a wine barâ where lingering is a team sport. Itâs a seafood-centric menu and they cure their fish in-house. A multi-course tasting menu is offered but with reservations only. Otherwise, pop in for an amaro flight, craft cocktail or to try any of the amazing wines (which are sourced exclusively from volcanic appellations).
Miller Union legends Chef Steven Satterfield and sommelier Neal McCarthy conceived of this fabulous new wine bar in Atlantaâs Poncey-Highland neighborhood and judging by the crowds, they filled a long overdue need. Itâs a tight but polished menu; the fish and the potato gnocchi in a silky tomato brodo was brilliantly elegant. Ditto the seared snapper laced with a silky soubise, and celery/fennel remoulade. Itâs noisy inside, best to book a seat on the covered patio (the high top table reservations are shared tables, but the vibe is convivial and friendly so itâs fun). Wine list is full of cool and intriguing options âplay the field a bit order a glass or two along with some oysters and ham and cheese beignets.
Krog Bar reopened in the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and is perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. Order a pretty zucchini salad laced with parmesan and basil lemon oil for lunch or dig into some coal fired artichokes. The coal-fired pizzas beg to be shared (order a few), especially the K.R.O.G pizza topped with fennel sausage, onion and mozzarella. No reservations and open for lunch as well as dinner.

Elise
Elise: Fans of Chef Craig Richards and his popular Lyla Lila restaurant should make note of Eliseâthe second dining concept from Richards that he opened in partnership with the Woodruff Arts Center. Elise will take over the former Table 1280 space on the Arts Center campus. But donât expect a 13-layer duck lasagna here, at Elise Chef Richards will offer an elevated menu of French and Italian cookingâwith the emphasis more on French than Italian.
And, a Delicious New Cocktail Menu: The Betty/St Julep Rooftop Bar: The Bettyâs velvety, hushed dining room is great for a romantic mealâespecially ensconced in one of their plush big boothsâbut the rooftop bar is where you have to start your visit. Located at Buckheadâs Kimpton Sylvan hotel, the ninth-floor rooftop bar St. Julep just refreshed their cocktail menu with agave-forward cocktails like the fruity and cooling Neon Moon (Lalo Blanco Tequila, Chareau Aloe, dragon fruit syrup & lemon). Down on the hotelâs main floor at The Betty, be sure to try their new Oaxacan Old Fashioned (Ocho Reposado Tequila, Banhez Mezcal, agave nectar & Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters).
